In South Carolina we are having our second Trucking Convoy for Special Olympics. We had our first one last year on 10-4-2008. We only had two months to throw it together. This year I started on Jan 2 talking about our convoy. The convoy has been done for over 8 years across the states but is so new to SC we are having to get the word out. GA is not having theirs this year and we are inviting the GA truckers any anyone else to come and be a part of ours. It will be on Sept 12, 2009 and will be close to where I-20 and I-77 come together. I have a flier I can send you if you want to give me your e-mail address. The trucking companies donate $100 to the convoy and send a truck and driver to it. It's tax deductible since we are a non profit group. We go 20 miles on the Interestate in a Convoy with Police Escort. Then we come back and serve everyone lunch. We will have items to raffle off if you are interested. There is a Flying J close by to park at if you come in the night before. The Flying J is off of I-20 exit 70 in Columiba. The money of course goes to the athletes/kids. Most have autism or down syndrome, etc. We have two athletes that did so well from SC that they got to compete in China. We will have the Gifted Warriors again this year from Spartanburg, SC. They are kids who are taught karate and put on a performance for us. We are told that the instructor has one in a wheelchair this year and he/she is learning karate and maybe will be there too. We are trying very hard to have a dunking booth with DOT officers in it. Not confirmed on that yet. Corp Norm (originally from NY-yankee) is coming up this weekend to help me go around to trucking companies here in my state to talk about the convoy. He started the convoys. He was previous military, then drove trucks and now is in law enforcement in FL. The North will meet the South again this weekend. LOL
I have been to a city not far from here and my son went with me and we visited 14 trucking companies and 2 police depts in one day. I will be at the Flying J promoting the convoy on Monday July 13, from 2:30-7:30 pm in Columbia. I am on Dave Nemo's station from time to time talking about it with Tim and Marcia and also on with Daniel Audet who is a member here on his station in FL. Admn 1 has been so nice to let me talk about the convoy on here. I know this is long..... But you asked me about the convoy. I just get so excited about it. I am sorry I probably wrote too much. Pictures of me on my page in the truck I rode in last year from TN. Barry Owens is a trucker in a wheelchair. Just an awesome person. Bobbiegale &nb sp;
If you are that close to Pittsburg then I am sure you have heard of Monogahelia. It is a Mill town. I think steel mill if I am correct. My dad was from there. My grandmother and grandfathere were from Italy and met here in the USA. Got married and when my dad was in his late teens his dad died and he worked in the steel mills. Thne he joined the army and served the end of WWII. Got stationed at Fort Jackson, SC met Mom and well the rest is history. I lvoed that grandmother and she died when I was about 14 years old. We learned to water skii here in the south and roller skate but not ice skate and snow skii. One summer we were up visiting family up there and someone had a boat and daddy took us water skiing in the Monongahelia River. I also pronounce that very southern too. LOL Have a great day. I am back to work at the bank this week. Also back to working on the planning of the Trucking Convoy for Special Olympics here in SC. Bobbiegale
How close is Allentown PA to Monongahelia, PA? (might not have spelled that correctly) I have family up there and have water skiied in that river when I was 12 years old. Long time ago. LOL Bobbiegale
